Pratt Institute must be held responsible for the safety conditions at 524 Myrtle Avenue. In December 2008, the new building's excavation was dangerous enough to prompt the Department of Buildings to issue a Stop Work Order until safety measures were put in place.
In response, the immediate problems were corrected, with no direction action to fix the root cause: scrupulous contractors. This is a reflection of Pratt Institutes indifference to the safety of workers, students and the community.
Contractors allowed by Pratt to perform work at 524 Myrtle Avenue accumulated fines at other jobsites, including:
$13,200 in New York City Environmental Control Board Violations for:
Lack of fall protection
Dangerously excessive amounts of debris
Failure to guard public property
Failure to provide protection to pedestrian traffic while lifting steel over the sidewalk
Failure to properly store combustible materials
Initial penalties of $1,500 in serious Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) violations
